El Paso Electric Company is engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in an area of approximately 10,000 square miles in west Texas and southern New Mexico. The Company owns or has ownership interests in six electrical generating facilities providing it with a net dependable generating capability of approximately 1,765 megawatts. During the year ended December 31, 2012, the Company's energy sources consisted of approximately 46% nuclear fuel, 32% natural gas, 6% coal, 16% purchased power and less than 1% generated by wind turbines. As of December 31, 2012, the Company served approximately 384,000 residential, commercial, industrial, public authority and wholesale customers. The Company distributes electricity to retail customers principally in El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico (representing approximately 62% and 12%, respectively, of the Company's retail revenues during 2012).
